Casket Girls – Brides for French Colonists and Cousin Baiting and Cousin Stalking: Saturday, August 21st

Welcome to August and a great line up for our August 21st PCGS Monthly Meeting.  Joey and Christine will be sharing presentations that promise to be both dynamic and educational.  Our August presentations will be virtual via Zoom.

Our short class will feature Joey Caccarozzo with Casket Girls – Brides for French Colonists.  Filles à la cassette, or Casket Girls, were women who were brought from France to the French colonies in the early 1700s to help populate French territories which were predominately settled by men.  The name comes from the small chests, known as casquettes in which they carried their clothes.  Learn why, to this day, these women are mentioned on every ghost tour in New Orleans.   Discover who these women really were, their journey to the French colonies, and the challenges they faced once they arrived.

For our main program, Christine Cohen will present “Cousin Baiting and Cousin Stalking.”  We will discuss the many ways to reach out to distant living cousins to help you expand your pedigree chart forward in time. You may find family treasures, photos, DNA test takers and information that will break down a brick wall. We will explore online trees, lineage societies, cemetery indexes, obituaries in newspapers, living people finder websites and social media.

Joey L. Caccarozzo is a federal trial attorney by day and a speaker and researcher on nights and weekends, with a focus in DNA, Italian, Louisiana, Slovak, and Ukrainian studies. She completed the Advanced Italian Genealogy course at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh in 2019 and her Italian and Eastern European genealogy certificates through the National Institute of Genealogy Studies in 2020. Joey is the speaker coordinator for the Pima County Genealogy Society and a member of its steering and programming committees.
