PCGS DNA Special Interest Group 8 Jan 2022

The Pima County Genealogy Society is offering an opportunity for all to attend the DNA Special Interest Group (SIG) on the 8th of January. Our SIGs are normally available to members only but for this special presentation, we are opening up the DNA SIG to all.

Research Like a Pro with DNA from Robin Wirthlin

Do you ever feel like your genetic genealogy research is scattered and overwhelming? Robin Wirthlin, a professional genealogist, (and Arizona native) is excited to explain how to Research Like a Pro with DNA by following a logical and organized process. Learn a methodical approach to streamline genetic genealogy research that will help you make progress and meet research objectives. A case study illustrates the process, and you can follow along to see how the process can help you in your research and break through brick walls to find your missing ancestors and make genetic connections.

Robin Wirthlin is a professional genealogist specializing in DNA. Her background in genetic research, B.S. in Molecular Biology from BYU, and Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University, helps her solve complex genetic genealogy research problems.

Robin loves using genetic genealogy to solve family history mysteries and break through “brick walls.” Her first solved case involving adoption and identification of birth parents was in 2015, and she has gone on to solve many others, including identifying the parents of previously unknown members of her own family.

Robin teaches genealogy classes on local and county levels, and also at Rootstech 2020, 2021, has some short presentations for Rootstech 2022. She blogs about streamlined ways of using DNA in family history research and helped develop the Research Like a Pro with DNA method.

Lucid Charts with DNA from Susan Fabian

Learn to use Lucid Chart, an online diagramming program, to create family trees to track DNA matches across platforms and see how they are related to you and each other to help prove hypotheses and break down brick walls. This presentation will provide step-by-step direction on how to use Lucid Chart and how to create a tree, and will show several completed DNA trees and other relationship charts that can be helpful in your research and add great visuals to research reports.

Susan V.H. Fabian is a research and genetic genealogist at Your Genealogy Journey / Your Genetic Journey specializing in tackling brick-wall problems and adoption cases using DNA. Her regional expertise is in Maryland State records.  Susan holds a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University and is currently a member of ProGen 52 and several other genealogy study groups. She has taken additional coursework in Genetic Genealogy, Forensic Genealogy, Advanced Search Methods, Mid-Atlantic Regional Studies, and Teaching.
Susan volunteers her time with Search Angels, Find-A-Grave, and the Maryland State Archives. She has taught classes in research methods and genetic genealogy.
What started as a challenge to find a family member nearly 30 years ago has blossomed into a passion for solving family puzzles which Susan shares enthusiastically with anyone who will listen.
