Are you one of the 35 million Americans who have Irish heritage, according to the 2000 census? Have you wanted to research those Irish origins, but don’t have access to the records? Did you know there is an Irish Cultural Center and McClelland Library in Phoenix?
The Irish Cultural Center campus contains three buildings (the Great Hall, the Cottage, and the McClelland Library), the large courtyard or Clos, and An Gorta Mor The Great Hunger Memorial. The entire campus was designed to bring a little slice of Ireland to Margaret Hance Park in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The McClelland Library is a Special Library dedicated to the legacy of Irish authors, history, literature and research of a Celtic nature. In addition, the McClelland library has access to many subscription online Irish resources not available anywhere else in Arizona.
Pima County Genealogy Society has organized a research trip to Phoenix on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, to tour and research at this unique facility. The cost is $35 per person, which includes transportation, the tour fee, and the genealogy research fee (use of their databases). We will arrive, get situated, and start the tour at 10:30 am.
For those who prefer to drive yourself and meet us there, the cost is $12 per person for the tour fee and the genealogy research fee. Please arrive no later than 10:15 am to join our tour at 10:30 am.
Bring your laptop, a flash drive if you like, and any papers you want to reference during your research time. For additional preparation, go online to https://www.azirish.org/ and click on the Research tab.
There will be two pickup spots in Tucson: one in Midtown (El Con Mall, exact spot to be announced) and one in the Northwest (at the Starbucks on the Southwest corner of Oracle and Ina).
Drinks and snacks are OK in the van, but not allowed at McClelland. You can keep food and snacks in the van if you like and have a picnic break in the park. Also, a coffee shop and several restaurants are nearby.
When we leave McClelland at 3 pm, we can make a short stop at the Cracker Barrel at I-10 and Chandler if you like.
