Feature Presentation: Shannon Combs-Bennett with Beyond the Obituary: Finding Death Resources
When death certificates fail us, obituaries are sought after documents. There can be a wealth of information and in particularly hard times could help us solve family mysteries. But what other publications are available when looking for an ancestor’s record of death?
Shannon Combs-Bennett is a Qualified Genealogist (QG) based out of northern Virginia. She writes and lectures on a variety of topics from basic methodology to genetics. Shannon earned her BS in Biology from Indiana University and her MSc in Genealogical, Heraldic, and Paleographic Studies from the University of Strathclyde. Currently, she is a doctoral student at Strathclyde in History and Genealogical Studies. In addition, Shannon holds a PLCGS in American Records from the National Institute for Genealogical Studies.
Flesh Out your Death Records with On-line Obituaries, Renee Cue
Historical newspaper obituaries often add a more interesting and complete picture of your ancestors’ lives. In some instances, you may be able to break through your brick wall! Renee will share resources for finding obituaries in historical newspapers as resources to identify and discover the rich stories about her ancestors and their families. Renee will go into detail about finding newspaper on-line sites with an emphasis on free resources. Attendees will receive a reference sheet to aid in their own research.
Renee Cue is a family history enthusiast and is an active participant and presented in several genealogy societies. Renee’s specific genealogy interests are Swiss Mennonite, Welsh, Scots by way of Ireland, and German immigrants to North America. Renee is the PCGS 1st Vice President, facilitates the PCGS Genealogy Writers Special Interest Group, and serves as the assistant Zoomer at our monthly meetings.
Mission Search and Rescue: US Military WWII Death Records, Linda Jewell
We’re on a mission to find US military WWII death records. Where can we locate information that helps us request these records, put them in context, and write memorials for current readers and future generations? We’ll focus on WWII, but you can adapt the information to locate death records from some other conflicts. A list of resources can help you unearth additional genealogical treasures. Expand and hone your research skills while honoring sacrifices by the American military.
Linda Jewell is a writer who backed into genealogy while researching a friend’s family story set in the Philippines during WWII. Linda grew up in an extended family of storytellers and continues to carry on that tradition with written family stories. Her goal is to remind her family of their heritage and to connect generations. She’s been published in newspapers, magazines, and compilation books—including some with Chicken Soup for the Soul. Linda is a member of the PCGS Writers Special Interest Group and Workshop and Tours Committee.
The Paper Trail of Death, Amy Urman
Death triggers a plethora of paperwork. In this talk, we will review some common and uncommon sources that can add to your ancestor’s story. Some of the topics include death certificates, cemetery records, burial permits, probate records, inquest records, funeral records, mortality records, and more.
Amy Urman is an experienced speaker, Professional Genealogist and Private Investigator. She holds a General Research Certificate from Boston University and is a graduate of ProGen. She is the co-founder and past president of the Pima County Genealogy Society.
