Organize Your Computer and Free Websites – Saturday, May 16

Join us for this month’s meeting, brought to you live in the safety of your home via the wonderful world of technology known as videoconferencing! We will present two topics this month.

Sherri Hessick

First, PCGS member Sherri Hessick will give a short class on A Baker’s Dozen: Free Genealogy Websites. The web has exploded with websites that genealogists find useful in their research, some charge a fee but many do not. This class will give an introduction to 13 free websites that you may or may not be familiar with.

Sherri Hessick is a genealogy lecturer, writer, and researcher. She volunteers at the Tucson Family History Center, teaches several classes at the annual Tucson Family History Fair, and has been a guest speaker at local genealogy clubs. Sherri is the Vice President of the Pima County Genealogy Society and serves as the society’s web manager and blogger. She holds a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University and has completed intensive training in Native American Research, Mastering Genealogical Documentation, Advanced Genealogical Methods, and Genetic Genealogy in Practice. She holds memberships in the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Illinois State Genealogical Society, the National Genealogical Society, the Utah Genealogical Society, and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Richard Young

After a short break, our guest speaker Richard Young will give us tips on Organizing Genealogy on Your Computer. He will give us a look at how to organize your many computer files, whether they be photos, census records, or original documents. We will look at several examples and discuss splitting vs. lumping, and strict vs. loose organization.

Richard Young is a retired technology specialist, author of Family History Tech blog, and has been working with genealogy for almost 50 years. He is the past President of the Family History Society of Arizona, a board member and webmaster to the Arizona Genealogical Advisory Board, and Vice President of the Arizona Council of Professional Genealogists.

Our monthly meetings are from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Arizona time (PDT). They are free and open to members and non-members alike. However, participants in our virtual Zoom meetings are required to register in advance for security reasons. After registering, the registrant will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. The link to register for the May 16 meeting is https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAtfuygrDwoGacYRF-zFC6RFqQhFaSwSw

The handouts will be available to PCGS members only on our website in the Secure Download area and the recording will be available to members only in the Videos area. Not a member? Go to our website’s Join/Renew page and see how easy it is to join online!

As we will not be meeting in person, there will not be door prizes. Nor will it be possible to play the Relatives Around Me game during the break. However, we hope that by continuing our monthly meetings in this format provides some comfort to our members knowing that they are staying safe while maintaining some semblance of normalcy in their routines.

DISCLAIMER: We are limited to 100 participants, but Zoom does not stop approving registrations when it reaches the 100 mark. A successful registration does not guarantee a seat in the meeting.
