Immigration and Mobile Apps – Saturday, August 15

Welcome back from our summer vacation! We had record highs in the month of July and didn’t get much rain. We are all hoping more rain will come soon.

Our August virtual meeting features two speakers from our own ranks: Bob Black and Joey Caccarozzo!

Bob Black

Bob Black is up first with a short class on Mobile Apps for Genealogists. This is an overview of helpful genealogy and family history mobile apps from FamilySearch, Ancestry, and others. Today’s technology lets us take our genealogy with us wherever we go!

Bob Black retired in 2015 after a 38-year career in healthcare human resources. He has been volunteering at the Family History Center since 2011 and served as Director from 2014 until early 2019. He currently serves on the PCGS Steering Committee. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Brigham Young University. When not working on family history, he works two days a week at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple on Ina and Skyline and spends as much time as he can with his wife, six children, and eleven grandchildren.

Following a short break, Joey Caccarozzo will speak on Becoming Americans. This program is a general overview of the immigration records available that help us piece together how, when, and why our immigrant ancestors came to America. We will discuss passenger lists, alien registration files, naturalization records, as well as many other records and where to find them.

Joey L. Caccarozzo is a federal trial attorney by day and a speaker and researcher on nights and weekends with a focus in DNA, Italian, Louisiana, Slovak, and Ukrainian studies. She completed the Advanced Italian Genealogy course at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh in 2019 and her Italian and Eastern European genealogy certificates through the National Institute of Genealogy Studies in 2020. Joey is the speaker coordinator for the Pima County Genealogy Society and a member of its steering and programming committees.

Our monthly meetings are from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Arizona time (PDT). They are free and open to members and non-members alike. However, participants in our live virtual Zoom meetings are required to register in advance for security reasons.
