Come join us next Saturday, May 19, for The Blue and the Grey — Tracking Down Your Confederate and Union Soldiers featuring Nicole Dyer and Amy Urman.

Nicole will speak on Sources to Research Confederate Soldiers Online. Confederate soldiers in your family tree may be more difficult to research than Union soldiers. Using the Compiled Military Service Record (CMSR) as a starting point, we’ll dive into the world of the Civil War by finding regiment histories, photographs, hospital descriptions, and more to bring your relative’s service to life. Online state archive collections, the Library of Congress’ Civil War Photo and Maps collections, digitized letters and diaries, and civil war forums may contain valuable tidbits to help you understand why they served and what the war was like for them.

Nicole Dyer is a genealogist, lecturer, and creator of FamilyLocket.com. She is the co-author of Research Like a Pro: A Genealogist’s Guide. She specializes in Southern United States research including Texas, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Virginia. Nicole speaks regularly at genealogy conferences and local events. She is a member of the Pima County Genealogy Society and a member of their steering committee, program committee, and social media committee. She also manages the society’s Twitter account. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in History Teaching and taught middle school for one year before her children were born. Nicole teaches family history storytime for preschool age children at the Tucson Family History Center and consults in local middle schools during units on family history. Nicole is currently pursuing genealogy accreditation in the Mid-South region of the United States.

Amy’s talk will be about the Sources for Locating Union Civil War Records. More than 2.8 million Union and Confederate soldiers served during the war. Records can be found on a federal, state, and local level. Amy will give us the tools to find the records for our Union soldiers, sailors, and marines at all levels.

Amy Urman is an experienced speaker, Professional Genealogist and Private Investigator. She holds a General Research Certificate from Boston University and is a graduate of ProGen. She spent twenty years working in a law office researching and hanging around courthouses prior to striking out on her own. Amy now owns her own Private Investigative agency, Nosy Wilma LLC. She has served in numerous volunteer and leadership positions for several state societies. She is the co-founder and current president of the Pima County Genealogy Society.
