Find and Analyze Records on Saturday, September 21, 2019

We will have the pleasure of hearing Bob Black and Kathleen Carter speaking at our general meeting on Saturday, September 21.

Bob Black will open the meeting with a short presentation on Resources at the Tucson Family History Center. The Family History Center at 500 S. Langley hosts several of our society smaller group meetings and is the largest Family History Center in southern Arizona since the permanent closure of the Mesa FamilySearch Library. The Tucson FHC holds a plethora of genealogy and family history resources, including free access to many paid subscription sites, consulting services, photo and document scanning, and the collection of genealogy books and materials. Bob’s presentation is sprinkled with humor to keep you from becoming overawed by the abundance of resources freely available to you.

Bob Black retired in 2015 after a 38-year career in healthcare human resources. He has been volunteering at the Family History Center since 2011 and served as Director from 2014 until early 2019. He currently serves on the PCGS Steering Committee. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Brigham Young University. When not working on family history, he works two days a week at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple on Ina and Skyline and spends as much time as he can with his wife, six children, and eleven grandchildren.

Following Bob’s presentation, Kathleen Carter will speak on Unreliable Records: Don’t Believe Everything You Read! The genealogy records we rely upon can be incorrect for a variety of reasons. This is a lighthearted look at some examples Kathleen has found while researching her family tree. You will laugh at the confusion that unreliable records may cause! And then talk about the importance of “reasonably exhaustive research” and “resolving conflicting evidence.”

Kathleen Carter was the first female certified sommelier in Arizona, and has taught wine appreciation classes for years. (No, she won’t be bringing samples to the meeting, sorry!) She also enjoys helping people to discover their ancestors and reaffirm family stories. Kathleen is an instructor of the “Genetic Genealogy in Practice” Study Group for the Pima County Genealogy Society, serves on the PCGS Steering Committee, and is the society’s Workshops & Tours Committee Chair.

We will play the Relatives Around Me game during the break. I find new cousins in the Society every month! If you haven’t played yet, read our blog post Are We Related? Find out on Saturday, April 21, 2018 to find out what you need to do before the meeting in order to play.

Our general meetings are free and open to members and non-members alike. All attendees are eligible for door prizes. The handouts for the presentations will be on our website in the Secure Download area and accessible by PCGS members only. An email will be sent out to all members when they are available. Not a member? Go to our website’s Join/Renew page and see how fast and easy it is to join online!
